Ruan Altman is a human trying to forget his past. Fa’ashi Orrin is a Novum trying to escape hers. The war had brought them together, now peace might tear them apart.

On the distant world of Talveras, half a century of Imperial rule has come to an end. The humans of the NUSA have weakened it, and now they seek the Novum’s help to finish it. While the Army ferrets out the few remaining pockets of resistance, Commissar Altman and the Civilian Service Corps offer aid and healing to a battered populace. He falls in love with a young woman named Fa’ashi Orrin, and for a brief moment it seems like the planet’s recovery will go smoothly. But the Novum are thirsty for vengeance against those who collaborated with the Empire during the occupation, and those accused rarely live to see a trial.

Ancient racial enmities begin to resurface when neighbor accuses neighbor, and blood lust reigns supreme. As deep feuds all old as Novum civilization itself threaten to plunge Talveras into ruinous civil conflict, suspicious eyes begin to fall on Fa’ashi. When rumor is accepted as fact, and prejudice corrupts justice, only one thing is clear Nothing is fair in love or war.

This SciFi Space Opera is new from first time author Ryan Hodge and is the first of the Wounded Worlds series.

Wounded Worlds Nihil Novum eBook Ryan Hodge

The novel has drama, action, romance, and emotional wounded characters that grow on you. I really enjoyed the story. The author immersed me in his world and danced a believable set of scenarios that pushed the tale forward in a smooth fashion.

The main characters are hurt from the ruinous conflict with the Imperials: friends lost, regretful actions, prejudiced and vengeful people, the fruits of war battering their personalities and relationships.

I enjoyed the numerous small unit conflicts and sole assassination missions. I enjoyed the weave of social suspicion and corrupt justice that molded Fa’ashi and Altman together. The specifics of the story aren’t important, others have written about it. What I liked about this space opera was the real feelings the author pulled out of me.

There are no cliffhangers to worry about.

Wounded Worlds Nihil Novum eBook Ryan Hodge Reviews

The way things were setup was very well done. Some authors tend to muddle things by carrying on different timelines at the same time. Ryan Hodge was able to do this in a manner that worked very well and helped the story to move along quite well.
Very interesting way the author jumps from present to past and back again. The way the story is told keeps you riveted and makes it hard to put down. Fast moving and everything ties in to make this a great story.
Only a handful of chapters into the books and its very entertaining and draws me in. The character of Sargent Altman grabs me right away and the whole idea the surrounds the military in this world. The plot essentially revolves around the invasion of earth by the Imperials (who are repelled by the humans and put on the defense because of it), an alien race who already own other worlds they've conquered and one of those is Talveras. This world is liberated by earth and the humans begin to teach about the democratic/republic way of life and how the NUSA uses it. The Novum of Talveras are a interestingly put together race and blend well into the book and are a realistic scifi race.

As a whole the book is well put together and invokes many thoughts and draws the reader into it right away. I would say this is a must read for any scifi fan or fantasy fan. It has drawn me into it and I love the set-up of the new world, but not leaving the earth we known and understand.
Great overall story and interesting sub-plots. The characters really shine.

Altman (the main character) develops and grows in very believable ways. No "cookie cutter" scifi hero, he starts out as a young, newbie soldier facing ugly realities & atrocities of fighting an alien invasion of Earth. Later in the war, Altman is a jaded officer nicknamed "Iceman", and post-war, is re-assigned to "cultural relations" on the liberated planet of Talaveras. It's here where much of the story is set.

Fa'ashi and Leah, the main female characters, are realistic, and both are integral to the story. They are definitely not afterthoughts. Fa'ashi's story will keep you guessing.

Dialogue is strong, especially amongst the military characters. The story transitions well from backstories for Altman and Fa'ashi (a Talaveran)to their shared experiences (and love story). Interesting Talaveran politics and culture provide intrigue and action.

Plenty of plot twists kept me engrossed in the story until the very end. Wounded Worlds is definitely hard to put down. I'd love to see a sequel!
It's the alien invasion apocalypse, but the humans have retaken Earth, and are now taking back (and liberating) the alien empire.

But the alien overlords, despite their overwhelming weapons, are not particularly competent--except for a few who are. And the rebellion has its dark (racist) side.

It was a good story, but I found the plot too full of holes (really--the rebel protagonist sets out to be the avatar of revenge, and all of a sudden, becomes Ninja-on-steroids? The alien overlords set traps, but don't send in the kinetic weapons to wipe out the ambushers?)
A story of romance, interplanetary war, bigotry, hate and the perplexity of moral choices.

The book follows three main storylines; Ruan Altman's past; a teenager and one of the last remnants of the human resistance on Earth. Fa'ashi Orrin's past; a teenager dealing with the occupation of her home world of Talveras and the bigotry of her own people for being a geliartik. And the present day of 2043, on the planet of Talveras, where the two main protagonists first meet and eventually form a relationship.

A major part of the book deals with war and how it can dehumanize it's combatants. The searing hate that can turn us into monsters, as we forget our morality. The hard choices that are made, sometimes more grey than black or white. I also really appreciated the inclusion of women as minor and major characters in the book. Maybe a silly point, but something that's not as common as it should be. The book was also filled with plenty of tactical warfare. So if you like action, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Some minor criticisms include The lack of inclusion of other Earth nations. It was so focused on the war fought by Americans that I sometimes wondered if any other countries survived the initial invasion. Did they have their own resistance and what part do they play now in the annexation of planets from the Empire? I also felt the backstory on Talveras was lacking. I would have liked to know how technologically advanced they were and how long they fought off the invasion or how large their planets population was. I also could never grasp an image of Luz in my head. How large was the city, what did the architecture look like and what did daily life consist of as a resident.

Another reviewer mentions that there are no cliffhangers. Well to be fair, there is one major cliffhanger that should have an effect on a sequel, if the author decides to continue the series, but it shouldn't have an effect on your enjoyment of the story.

Overall, a solid read. I give it 4 out 5, with some head room for growth.
